A hidden gem in central Nova Scotia, Truro is a small town of roughly 12,000 people and over 30 statues. Carved in wood by local artists, each work is an original piece of art that depicts the town's heritage in vivid detail. The first statues appeared as a means to preserve the many trees that had died of Dutch elm disease. Moreover, many statues are still on their original stumps. From the hockey player to the Scottish piper and highland dancer, there is a statue here for everyone!
Truro was originally named Cobequid by the Mi'kmaq. This means 'place of rushing water' referring to the Salmon River which runs along the town's northern border and is renown for its tidal bore. Local town's people will tell you that the best point to view the tidal bore is from the Pallister Motel and Restaurant where you will also find an interpretative center. From here you should make your way to Victoria Park, a 400 acre green space on the southern border of Truro where you can go for a stroll by Lepper Brook and its two magnificent waterfalls.
Truro is also home to the Nova Scotia Tulip Festival which is celebrating its ten year anniversary this year from May 17th to the 21st. This year the Golden Age Auto Club's Show & Shine will be taking place on the same weekend and if you arrive by Friday May 18th, you will have a the chance to enjoy some fireworks on top of everything else. While you're in the area, make a point to stop by the Nova Scotia's Agricultural College Rock Garden in the neighboring village of Bible Hill. Its construction began in 2002 and was only recently completed. It contains more than 450 tons of local red granite and covers more than half an acre. Take a walk along the red granite paths, over cedar bridges designed by local students and across the dry stream beds. See if you can spot the Golden Japanese Barberry, the Bowling Ball bushes or the Sunburst Yew. For a great afternoon in the sun, bring a picnic basket with you, sit on one of the many benches in the middle of the crevice garden and enjoy. Have a great weekend!
